16th National Geotechnical Congress

The 16th National Geotechnical Congress, under the theme “Geotechnics, Natural and Geotechnical Risks and Sustainability”, organized in partnership with the Regional Laboratory of Civil Engineering of the Azores.

The event took place between May 27 and 30 in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores, benefiting from direct contact with specific geological and geotechnical conditions of that volcanic region.

In association with the 16CNG the 6th Luso-Spanish Geotechnical Works were held, under the theme “Geotechnical Works in Volcanic Lands”, organized together with the Spanish Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Inginería.

A 428 abstracts were initially registered, submitted by a total of 911 authors, from 26 countries, especially Portugal, Brazil and Spain. The scientific review process, which involved a total of 104 reviewers, ultimately led to 266 papers accepted, of which 158 were presented orally during the event. With 330 registrations registered, 25 sponsors and 12 exhibitors, the Congress of the Azores far exceeded the initial expectations.

At the end of the congress, the participants were invited to respond to a brief inquiry to assess the degree of satisfaction with 16CNG. In an overall assessment, of the 95 opinions collected, 99% expressed their satisfaction, of which 75% were very satisfied. This extremely positive result justifies a warm vote of congratulations and thanks to the Organizing Committee.

The Congress of the Azores will be remembered by all those who took part in it as a special and unique Geotechnical Congress!
