José Folque / Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language

The purpose of the José Folque / Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language is to reward works that contribute to the progress of technical and scientific knowledge and to the resolution of national problems in the field of geotechnical specialties.

Previous Awards

On May 14, 2023, the 12th Meeting of Young Geotechnicians was held at the Colégio do Espírito Santo of the University of Évora.

The Award Jury has decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Award in Portuguese – 2023:

André Silva, with the paper entitled “Mitigation of natural disaster risks on slopes: The crucial role of automated geotechnical instrumentation”.

Two Honorable Mentions were also awarded – Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language:

André Filipe Pereira da Silva for the work entitled “Embankment behavior on soft soil in the expansion works of a sea port in the coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil”.

The prizes were awarded the same day after the opening session of the 18th National Geotechnical Congress.

On November 14, 2021, at the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, in Lisbon, the 11th Young Geotechnicians Meeting took place.

The Jury decided to award the Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language 2020

Patrícia Barbosa Vieira, with the paper entitled “Evaluation of rotational stiffness in the behavior of footings submitted to eccentric loads”.

Two Honorable Mentions were also awarded – Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language:

André Filipe Pereira da Silva for the work entitled “Embankment behavior on soft soil in the expansion works of a sea port in the coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil”.

Maria Luísa de Melo Madeiras P. Pereira for the work entitled “Geotechnical characterization of the basalts of the Lisbon volcanic complex – from rock mass to intact rock”.

The awards were presented on November 14th after the opening session of the 17th National Geotechnical Congress at LNEC.

On December 6, 2019, the 10th Meeting of Young Geotechnicals took place at the Academy of Sciences, in Lisbon.

The Jury of the Award, decided to award Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language 2019 to Francisco Centeno Dias, with the work entitled “Comparison of sandy soil treatment techniques by biocement considering homogeneity and its effects on simple compressive strength”.

The Prize was awarded on December 6 at the closing session of the Seminar Excavations in Urban Environment.

On May 27, 2018, the 9th Meeting of Young Geotechnics took place at the Auditorium of the University of the Azores.

The Jury of the Prize decided to award the Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language – 2018 to Martim Rodrigues de Matos,with the work titled “Excavation of vertical rock pits through the method of Suspended Loads at Gouvães Hydroelectric Power Plant”.

The Prize was awarded on May 29, 2018, before the closure of the 16th National Congress of Geotechnics.

On October 13, 2017, at the Auditorium of the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering, the 8th Meeting of Young Geotechnics took place.

The Jury of the Prize decided to award the Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language – 2017 to Catarina Fartaria, with the work titled “Landfills of Approach to Integrated Bridges: Mitigation of Settlements through Reinforcement with Geogrids”.

Were also awarded two Honorable Mentions Young Geotechnical in Portuguese Language: to Ana Sofia Saldanha, with the article Microzonamento of susceptibility to liquefaction applied to a case study from the Lisbon region and to Pedro Patrício, with the article Influence of flexural strength of containment walls in the bottom breaking of excavations in sandy soils.

The Prize was awarded on October 13, 2017, before the end of the 1st Seminar on Geotechnics in Transportation.

On June 19, 2016, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, on the first day of the 15th National Congress of Geotechnics and the 8th Luso-Brazilian Congress of Geotechnics, the 7th Meeting of Young Geotechnics took place.

The Jury of the Prize decided to award the Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language – 2016 to João Pedro Saraiva, with the work titled “Evaluation of soil resistance to the cutting of stakes installed in offshore conditions”.

An Honorable Mention – Young Geotechnical in Portuguese: Vanessa Catarina Ramos Aleixo was also awarded with the article “Bottom break in excavations due to ascending percolation”.

The Prizes were awarded in the closing session of the 15th National Congress of Geotechnics and 8th Luso-Brazilian Congress of Geotechnics, which took place on June 22, 2016.

On March 25, 2015, at the Auditorium of the National Civil Engineering Laboratory, the 6th Meeting of Young Geotechnics took place.

The Jury of the Prize, decided to award the Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language – 2015 to Henrique Lopes dos Santos Lopes, with the work titled “Thermal characterization of a solo by the hot wire method”

The Prize was awarded on 25 March 2015, prior to the General Meeting of SPG.

On April 6, 2014, at the Standing Amphitheater of the University of Beira Interior (UBI), the 5th Meeting of Young Geotechnics took place.

The Prize Jury decided to award the Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language – 2014 to Ana Luísa Gonçalves Ramos, with the work titled “Characterization and Numerical Modeling of the Roughness of Rocky Discontinuities”.

The Prize was awarded on April 8, 2014, prior to the Closing Session of the 14th National Congress of Geotechnics.

On March 20, 2013, the Fourth Meeting of Young Geotechnics took place at the LNEC Congress Center, where the Portuguese Geotechnical Youth Awards were presented.

The Jury of the Prize decided to award the Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language – 2013 to Catarina Cota, with the work entitled “Influence of Land Shape Surface Shape on the Behavior of a Tunnel and its Consequences in the Evaluation of Damage to Surface Structures”.

Two Honorable Mentions were awarded: Gonçalo Rodrigues with the article “Study of the Durability of Two Recycled Aggregates for Application in the Landfill Drainage Layer” and Miguel Ferreira do Amaralwith the article “Hydro-Mechanical Behavior of Silt Sand of Porto in Cemented and Unsaturated Conditions “.

On April 17, 2012, at the Technical Institute of Lisbon, the 3rd Meeting of Young Geotechnics took place, with the Prize delivered on April 19, 2012, at the LNEC Congress Center.

The Jury of the Prize, decided to award the Young Geotechnical Award in Portuguese Language – 2012 to Sara Rios da Rocha e Silva, with the work entitled “Cyclic Behavior of Soil-Cement Mixtures”.

On March 23, 2011, at the LNEC Congress Center, the 2nd Meeting of Young Geotechnics took place and where the Geotechnical Youth Awards in Portuguese Language were delivered.

The Jury decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Prize in Portuguese Language – 2011, in ex aequo to André Manuel Soares dos Reiswith the paper entitled “Hydro-mechanical behavior of compacted soils with different compaction water content” and to Magda Cristina Rodrigues Roquewith a paper entitled “Mining degraded areas. Metodologia para os estudos de caracterização e aplicação à mina de Sto António, Penedono”.

On April 26, 2010, at the University of Minho, the 1st Meeting of Young Geotechnicians took place and where the first Young Geotechnicians Award in Portuguese was delivered.

The Jury decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Prize in Portuguese Language – 2010 to Gonçalo Mendes Diniz Vieira, with the work entitled “Tunnels of the 98th section of the ML Red Line – Project and Work Monitoring” and the Honorary Award to Rui Francisco Vieira M. Loureiro da Cruz, with the paper entitled “Three-Dimensional Modeling of the Behavior of the Landfill of Santa Eulália”.
