The Portuguese Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS–Portugal), integrated into the Portuguese Geotechnical Society (SPG), is made up of Portuguese members associated with the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS). It is a non-profit association of individual and corporate members dedicated to:
- Promote and disseminate scientific and technical knowledge on geosynthetics.
- Stimulate scientific and technological advances in geosynthetics and its applications.
- Encourage the development of methodologies for on-site application and quality control of geosynthetics.
- Improve communication between designers, installers, manufacturers and users, and provide better understanding of geosynthetics behaviour and its applications in engineering works.
The IGS-Portugal was founded on 29 March 2001 in line with the IGS (International Geosynthetic Society). The Portuguese Chapter of the IGS was formally approved in the SPG General Assembly meeting on September 22, 2002. It is worth underscoring the leading role of Professor Maria de Lurdes Lopes, at the time member of the IGS Board, as an advocate for SPG integration into IGS.

Book on Geosynthetics
This book aims to raise awareness of the benefits of using geosynthetics and the geotechnical challenge that involves the design and installation of these materials in multiple civil engineering works: providing the reader with a basic understanding of the main types of geosynthetics and how their properties are decisive in the various functions they can perform in their multiple applications; also indicate for these materials the relevant aspects of design, installation, quality control and durability, in a straightforward and easy to understand approach, providing examples of case studies.
Portuguese experts, academics, researchers, and professionals on the design, installation, quality control and durability of these materials, were invited to participate. Whilst incorporating many years of involvement by the authors, the aim is for the book to be valid for a broad audience: from graduates, post-graduates, professors, designers, contractors, owners, as well as to all professionals interested in this topic.
The first two chapters are dedicated to the raw material/manufacturing processes and the geosynthetics’ main properties and functions. The following six chapters are devoted to the use of geosynthetics in specific applications. These chapters are associated with sixteen Portuguese and International case studies. It follows a chapter on quality assurance of geosynthetics installation and the book ends with a chapter on these materials’ long-term behaviour

Awards
The International Geosynthetics Society presents a variety of awards to both individual, corporate and student members. The awards are presented to a member or a group of members who have made an outstanding contribution towards the development and use of geosynthetics through their scientific and technological work or for service to the IGS.
Of the existing awards, we highlight the following:
Granted by the IGS on the basis of a proposal from the IGS Portugal Board, which defines the application conditions in Portugal (regulation). Each chapter of the IGS has the opportunity to run a contest among their student members to receive this award. The award consists of a $1000 stipend to assist with travel to their regional conference and the opportunity to present their winning paper at the conference. Each student receives a certificate.
This is the most prestigious of all the IGS Awards and recognizes advances in the scientific and engineering development of geosynthetics products and associated technologies. This award is given out every four years in concert with the IGS General Assembly and the International Conference on Geosynthetics (ICG). The IGS Award will be presented to individuals or groups of individuals who made an outstanding contribution to the development and use of geosynthetics, related products or associated technologies, through their scientific and technological work. For example an award can be given for design and construction of a structure; publication of a technical document (paper, book, article, manual); completion of a research program; development of new products and techniques.
This award is identical to the IGS Award but given specifically to members under the age of 36 years.

The Portuguese translation of the eBook was successfully completed in a fruitful cooperation between the Portuguese and Brazilian chapters of the IGS.

Training
The IGS-Portugal provides the means and establishes the necessary contacts to carry out specialized training in distinct fields related to geosynthetics applications.
The format, scope and schedule of the training sessions will be established and agreed according to each situation through prior contact with the IGS-Portugal secretariat.
Information on training sessions and other events is found on the International Geosynthetics Society
