José Folque / Young Geotechnical Award in English

The objective of the José Folque / Young Geotechnical Award in English is to reward research work which will contribute to the progress of technical and scientific knowledge and to the resolution of national problems in the field of geotechnical specialties contemplated by ISSMGE.

Previous Awards

On May 14, 2023, the 12th Meeting of Young Geotechnicians was held at the Colégio do Espírito Santo of the University of Évora.

The Jury decided to award the José Folque Award in English – 2023 to Tiago Rodrigues, for his work entitled “Geotechnical characterization of the rock mass surrounding the Aljustrel mining compound”.

The winner of the English language paper was awarded a certificate and will represent Portugal at the next European Conference of Young Geotechnicians.

On November 14, 2021, at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC), in Lisbon, the 11th Young Geotechnicians Meeting took place.

The Jury decided to award the José Folque Prize in English Language – 2020 to Ana Luísa Gonçalves Ramos, with the paper entitled “Assessment of the long term dynamic behaviour of innovative railway reack solutions”.

An Honorable Mention – José Folque Prize in English was also awarded to João Cardoso Bernardo with the paper “The effects of high temperatures on the characteristics of a Portuguese granite”.

The Prize was awarded on November 14, 2021 after the opening session of the 17th National Geotechnical Congress.

The winner of the English language paper was awarded a certificate and will represent Portugal at the next European Conference of Young Geotechnicians.

On December 6, 2019, the 10th Meeting of Young Geotechnicals took place at the Academy of Sciences, in Lisbon.

The Prize Jury decided give the award the Young Geotechnicals in English Language – 2019 to João Miguel Ventura Sequeira, with the paper entitled “Energy efficiency evaluation in thermo-active structures”.

The Prize Jury decided give an Honorable Mention – José Folque Award in English to João Gondar with the work “Study of BIM applied to geotechnical project: a 5D / BIM approach”.

The Prize was awarded on December 6 at the closing session of the Seminar Excavations in Urban Environment.

João Sequeira was recived a certificate attesting this distinction and will represent Portugal at the 28th European Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference, in December 17-19, 2020.

On May 27, 2018, the 9th Meeting of Young Geotechnicians took place at the Auditorium of the University of the Azores.

The Jury of the Award, decided to award the Young Geotechnicians in English Language Award – 2018 to Luís Miranda, with the work entitled “Laboratory Testing and Numerical Modelling of the Dynamic Behaviour of Tagus River Sand”.

The Prize was awarded on May 29, 2018, before the closure of the 16th National Congress of Geotechnics.

On October 13, 2017, the 8th Meeting of Young Geotechnicians was held at the Auditorium of the National Civil Engineering Laboratory.

The Jury of the Prize, decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Prize in English Language – 2017 to Manuel Parente, with the work entitled “Intelligent Eartworks Optimization System”. The Prize was awarded on October 13, 2017, before the closing of the 1st Seminar on Geotechnics in Transportation.

The contestant awarded with the paper in English language was entitled to a certificate proving the distinction and will represent Portugal at the European Conference of Young Geotechnicians – 2018.

On June 19, 2016 during the first day of the 15th National Geotechnical Congress / 8th Luso-Brazilian Geotechnical Congress, the 7th Young Geotechnicians Meeting took place in the FEUP Auditorium.

The Jury of the Award, decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Award in English Language – 2016 to Daniel da Costa Ribeiro, with the work entitled “Modeling the Mechanical Behavior of Sand-Cement Mixtures”. The award was delivered during the closing session of the 15th National Geotechnics Congress and the 8th Luso-Brazilian Geotechnics Congress, which took place on June 22.
The contestant awarded with the English language paper was entitled to a certificate proving the distinction and represented Portugal at the International Conference of Young Geotechnicians – 2017.

An Honorable Mention – Young Geotechnicians in English Language was also awarded to Fernanda Bessa Ferreira with the paper “Geogrid residual soil interaction under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions”.

On March 25, 2015, the 6th Meeting of Young Geotechnicians took place at the Auditorium of the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering.

The Jury of the Award, decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Award in English Language – 2015 to Fátima Maria Pereira Gouveia, with the work entitled “Combined analysis of single station ambient vibration measurements and MASW method”. The Prize was awarded on March 25, 2015, before the General Assembly of the SPG.

The contestant awarded with the English language paper was entitled to a certificate proving the distinction and represented Portugal at the European Conference of Young Geotechnicians – 2016.

On April 6, 2014, at the Parada Amphitheater, of the University of Beira Interior, the 5th Meeting of Young Geotechnicians took place and the Award was delivered on April 8, 2014, before the Closing Session of the 14th National Geotechnical Congress.

The Jury of the Award, decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Award in English Language – 2014 to Gonçalo Teixeira Faustino, with the work entitled “Reability Analysis of Tunnel Convergence: Is it Woth the Effort?”.

The winner of the English language paper was awarded a certificate and represented Portugal at the 6th International Conference of Young Geotechnicians – 2015.

The Jury decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Award in English Language – 2013 to Joana Gonçalves Sumares Betencourt Ribeiro, with the paper entitled “Behaviour of Single Piles under Axial Loading. Analysis of Settlement and Load Distribution”.

The contestant awarded with the paper in English language was entitled to a certificate proving the distinction and represented Portugal in the 23rd European Conference of Young Geotechnicians – 2014, held from 2 to 5 September 2014, in Barcelona, Spain, organized by ISSMGE.

On April 17, 2012, at Instituto Superior Técnico, the 3rd Meeting of Young Geotechnicians took place, and the Award was delivered on April 19, 2012, at LNEC’s Congress Center.

The Jury of the Prize, decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Prize in English Language – 2012 to António Santos Carvalho Cabral Araújo Correia, with the work entitled “An Innovative Pile Head Macro-Element Model for Seismic Analysis of Pile/Column Supports”.

The contestant awarded with the English language paper was entitled to a certificate proving the distinction and represented Portugal at the 5th International Conference of Young Geotechnicians – 2013, held from August 31 to September 1, 2013, in Paris, France, organized by ISSMGE.

On March 23, 2011, the 2nd Meeting of Young Geotechnicians took place at LNEC’s Congress Center Auditorium, where the Young Geotechnicians in English Language Award was delivered.

The Jury decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Prize in English Language – 2011 to Luís Manuel Araújo Santos, with the paper entitled “Numerical simulation of tunnel construction in London Clay using three constitutive models”.

The contestant awarded with the English language paper was entitled to a certificate proving the distinction and represented Portugal at the 22nd European Conference of Young Geotechnicians – 2012, from August 26 to 29, 2012, in Gothenburg, Sweden.

On April 26, 2010, at the University of Minho, the 1st Young Geotechnicians Meeting took place and where the first English Language Young Geotechnicians Award was delivered.

The Jury of the Prize has decided to award the Young Geotechnicians Prize in English Language – 2010 to Vera Lúcia Baptista Faustino, with the paper entitled “Contribution for the Dissemination of Rockfill Dam with Bituminous Concrete Core Solution in Portugal”, and that represented Portugal in the 21st European Conference of Young Geotechnicians – 2011, from 4 to 7 September 2011, in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
