NUMGE 2018 – 9TH EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

The 9th European Conference on Numerical Methods in Geotechnical Engineering (NUMGE 2018) was held from June 25 to 27, 2018 at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, with the joint organization of FEUP and SPG, under the auspices of ISSMGE.

The conference followed a series begun 32 years ago (Stuttgart, Germany, 1986, Santander, Spain, 1990, Manchester, United Kingdom, 1994, Udine, Italy, 1998, Paris, France, 2002, Graz, Austria, 2006, Trondheim , Norway, 2010, Delft, The Netherlands, 2014), and has been consolidated as the most important international forum for the development and application of numerical methods in the analysis of geotechnical problems.

The conference was attended by 240 participants, of which about 200 were foreigners from 38 countries on 5 continents. In its technical aspect, the conference had 5 Keynote Lectures (in plenary session) and 204 communications, all presented orally (in 4 parallel sessions).

The Portuguese participation was very relevant: about 30 communications involving national authors were presented and two of the Keynote Lectures were delivered by Portuguese colleagues, SPG members: José Pedro de Lemos (Rock failure analysis with discrete elements) and Pedro Alves Costa (“Ground borne vibrations induced by railway traffic.” The role of numerical modeling.)).

The two-volume, 1650-page conference proceedings were published by the CRC Press of the Taylor & Francis group, with editors being members of the Organizing Committee.

To the generous enjoyment of the participants, the excellent conditions provided by the campus of FEUP and the social program, which provided an intense interaction and a particularly pleasant contact with the city of Porto.

The SPG Board addresses to the members of the Organizing Committee, and in particular to its President, António Silva Cardoso, warm congratulations on the success achieved . To all the participating partners of SPG, and especially to José Vieira Lemos and Pedro Alves Costa, SPG thanks the relevant contribution to the international affirmation of Geotecnia Portuguesa.
