3rd International Conference On Transportation Geotechnics

The 3rd International Conference on Transportation Geotechnics (3rd ICTG 2016) took place from September 4 to 7, 2016, organized by the Portuguese Geotechnical Society, the University of Minho and the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.

On September 4, the program took place at the University of Minho, in Guimarães, and at the Infante D. Henrique Auditorium, in the new Terminal de Cruzeiros de Leixões. On the other days, the sessions take place at the Centro Cultural Vila Flor in Guimarães.

The events that took place on September 4 were organized by the coordinators of the working groups on the same subject of the SPG’s Portuguese Commission on Geotechnics in Transport. Workshops and the 1st Young Transportation Geotechnics Engineers (1st YTGE), with 188 participants, are also featured in this newsletter. The content of each of these events is available in open-access e-books:

  • Workshop 1 – Geosynthetics in Transportation Geotechnics
    Extended abstracts e-book.
    Presentations e-book.
  • Workshop 2 – Harbour Geotechnics
    Extended abstracts e-book.
    Presentations e-book
  • Workshop 3 – Non Destructive Technologies
  • Workshop 4 – Ground Improvement and Soil Stabilisation
    Extended abstracts e-book.
    Presentations e-book.
  • 1st Young Transportations Geotechnics Engineering Meeting (YTGE)
    Abstracts and presentations e-book.

The ISSMGE 1st International Meeting of Young Engineers in Transportation Geotechnics (1st YTGE Meeting), in association with the 3rdlCTG 2016, took place at the University of Minho, Guimarães, and aimed to provide an international forum for doctoral and post-doctoral students, as well as research engineers and designers in transportation geotechnics. 20 contributions were submitted, covering 10 countries, and 38 participants from 17 countries were registered. Special thanks go to the Organizing Committee (Joaquim Tinoco, André Paixão and Cristina Ribeiro), to Elsevier for sponsoring the meeting, to Roger Frank (President of ISSMGE) for the Inaugural Lecture “The Future of Geotechnical Engineering – Some Thoughts”, and to Christopher Greenwell (Elsevier Publishing Director for Engineering) for the Invited Lecture “Journal Publishing and the Basket of Metrics”. The meeting ended with a social gathering in the atrium of the School of Engineering, where President Zhen Zhang treated the participants to a musical moment, playing traditional Chinese music on her guzheng.

From September 5 to 7, the 3rd ICTG 2016 technical sessions took place, which included the 1st Proctor Lecture, by Buddhima Indraratna, published in vol. 7 of the journal Transportation Geotechnics, two Keynote Lectures, presented by Erol Tutumluer and Anand Puppala, published in vol. 9 of the same journal, the Mercer Lecture (IGS), by Jorge Zornberg, as well as 4 thematic sessions (19 presentations). There were also two poster sessions (48 posters) and the technical exhibition (11 exhibitors), as well as the inaugural meeting of the New Group for Intelligent Construction. There were 273 participants in the technical sessions, which together with the events on September 4, amounted to 461 participants.

The Conference proceedings contain 182 papers, which resulted from 292 abstracts from 50 countries and involved more than 900 authors. The articles, indexed in SCOPUS, are freely available and can be downloaded from the Procedia Engineering website. The two Keynote Lectures “Advances in Ground Modification with Chemical Additives: From theory to practice” and “Rutting Prediction in Airport Pavement Granular Base / Subbase: An approach based on stress history” are also available. The 1st Proctor Lecture, distributed to participants, can be obtained from SPG (limited number) or purchased on the Transportation Geotechnics website.

In addition, an e-book has been published as a supplement to the Conference Proceedings and the documentation distributed to participants, available for download at website, which includes an account of the conference with photos, organization, sponsors, program, opening ceremony, social program, creation of the International Intelligent Construction Technologies Group, announcements, closing ceremony and statistics on the conference. In addition, presentations provided by the authors are included, distributed among the Keynote, Theme and Special Lectures, as well as the Theme Sessions Lectures. Posters provided by the authors and references to the Formal Meetings held during the Conference are also included in the e-book.
