On April 10th, Eng. Daniel Leite, a graduate in Urban Engineering from the École des Ingénieurs de la Ville de Paris, invited member of the CPT – Portuguese Commission of Tunnels and Underground Space, member of AFTES – French Association of Tunnels and Underground Space, and ITA – International Tunneling Association, led the 1st-year Geology students from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon on a journey through underground spaces… from the beginning of times until today, addressing uses and functionalities.
As cities grow, cities change, cities evolve. Cities need space, more functions, efficiency, and sustainability. Underground spaces have always been part of human life from its origin to the present day… and they are a valid, solid, and coherent response to new urban challenges. When talking about underground spaces, one cannot obviously ignore the volume that accommodates them, the ground that surrounds them.
